Cropping, what? Crop Sensors?

I’m announcing a new tool! A crop factor calculator. Here is a link to my dedicated page for a crop factor calculator. You can also try it here at the bottom of the page.

Many often misunderstand what crop factor or lens equivalency means. Really it just means that a lens you are planning to use was meant to cover a different sensor size. Usually you would be using a lens meant for a larger sensor than the one you will be using.

A 50mm lens will always be a 50mm lens, but if the the image is being projected onto a smaller area, it will effectively be zoomed in.

I captured this phenomenon

You may hear a 50mm lens is equivalent to an 80mm lens on a crop (or APSC) sensor. It is equivalent to what an 80mm lens would look like on a full frame sensor or 35mm film frame, but it is still only a 50mm lens.

Just that one note though, because

I cannot imagine explaining this phenomenon any better than Gerald Undone already has, so imbedded below is his video on the topic. I learned a tremendous amount from this one. I also recommend pretty much anything he has done as part of his “Nerdy Explanations” playlist on YouTube.
